The Meaning of Amatya (अमात्य)

Amatya is a name of Sanskrit origin. The word Amatya (अमात्य) means councilor, minister, or divine advisor. In the context of ancient India, an Amatya was a prominent minister or advisor to a king or ruler — elected for qualities like purity, intelligence, affluence in wealth, well-tested virtues, and comprehensive wisdom.

In Dharmashastra literature such as the Manusmriti and the Baudhayana-dharmasutra, Amatya refers to a councelor to be elected by the king. In Natyashastra, Amatya is a mode of address used by Brahmins to address ministers. The ancient play Mudrarakshasa features the character Rakshasa who holds the post of Amatya (prime minister) in the Nanda and Maurya courts of Magadha.
